Chapter 7

  1. The more and more that I read this book, the more I realize that Dr. Levine uses a lot of sarcasm in his writing. Does anyone else see this?

Anyway, this was the chapter that I found myself agreeing with Dr. Levine more than I normally do. For instance, on page 116, he says that Roberta needed to experience "the germination and cultivation of ideas- deploying her knowledge base to help shape those ideas." I would agree with this because in order to have ideas a person needs to learn. Another point that I would agree with is his statement "Roberta had a problem in that she was getting no joy from her education. That could lead to getting no joy from a career. Education should cultivate a taste for learning and productive output." As teachers, aren't we supposed to do this? Aren't we supposed to get our students excited about learning? Aren't we supposed to create lifelong learners who go into a career to be productive citizens? I know that I am definitely trying.

  2. I liked some of the ideas in this chapter also. I did not think Roberta belonged in a book about unproductive kids just because her mind works in a different way, to me she did not belong under the category of output failure despite her lack of creativity and originality. On page120 dr. Levine talks about the importance of critical thinking and encouraging students to generate their own ideas and reactions to the information they are learning, I have encouraged this often with my students this year. The kids are a little nervous to develop their own ideas at first, but most are getting the hang of it now.
