Chapter 5

  1. As I read about Scott, I couldn't help but wonder if some of his problems stems from inferiority. His dad and mom were well accomplished. His brother also seemed gifted. Maybe he felt that whatever he did couldn't hold a candle to the rest of his family, especially as a younger child, so he started shutting down. The fast life he started living, could have been his way or reaching out or giving up.
It also seems to coincide with what was brought up in other chapters (especially with Ginny) with criticism and how much one individual can handle.

  2. Great insights Tiffany, I would have to agree with you as well that I think that a lot of his problems stem from his inferiority.

  3. After finishing Chapter 5, I can't help but wonder why Dr. Levine would selected these specific people to write about in each chapter. In each case, he doesn't seem to much of a difference in the child's life and in almost all instances, it's as if the parents are too busy and don't follow through on his recommendations. I just wonder, why didn't they? If they were really all that concerned about their child, wouldn't they want to try everything to help him or her? And, if Scott really was serious about changing and getting help, why did Dr. Levine have no idea what happened to him next? Wouldn't you think that if Dr. Levine was that influential to him, that Scott would at least write a letter or email updating him every once in a while? I'm just confused I guess and don't understand where he is going with this book. Can anyone help?

Also, this chapter reminds me of how helpless I feel sometimes when I work with my own students. I can teach specific strategies and skills at school with them, but once they get home, there is no way to take away all of the factors that negatively effect student learning. Most often I feel like I am fighting the same battle day after day.

  4. I agree with you both. I had exact same thought as you Kerri. It doesn't seem like demystifying these kids and teaching them strategies has helped them at all! It seems that one of his messages is just to be careful not to damage self esteem of the students we work with. Specifically by calling them lazy, but hey I could have learned that from the title. Lol. Anyway though these kids were all damaged early on in their lives, before they hit junior high, because multiple people in their lives seemed to think they were lazy. I wonder if these kids had been given strategies and been demystified earlier, would they have turned out better? I think we have seen what can happen when a students self esteem is damaged when we read about Scott. Well on to chapter 6, hopefully Dr. Levine is successful with Darnell.

  5. I keep hoping but I feel like the more I keep reading, the more skeptical of Dr. Levine I get.
